Upon receiving a dual degree in Art Practice and History of Art from University of California, Berkeley, Walter Maciel worked as a gallery director in San Francisco from 1992-2005. He moved to Los Angeles at the end of 2005 to create a program for his own space that opened in March 2006. The gallery is located in the Culver City Art District in Los Angeles among many of the top galleries on the West Coast. An auxiliary gallery space at the Pacific Design Center was in operation from January through July 2010 and featured the work of gallery artists and special projects.

Walter Maciel Gallery has participated in many national and international art fairs including Miami Project, Volta New York, Pulse Miami, Pulse New York, Pulse London, NADA (New Art Dealers Association) Miami, Aqua Miami, Aqua Hotel Miami, artMRKT San Francisco, ArtPad San Francisco, Next Chicago, Edition Chicago and Swab Barcelona.

Walter has served on many boards and committees including Southern Exposure, Headlands Center for the Arts, the San Francisco Art Dealers Association. He has been on lecture panels and/or grad reviews at the San Francisco Art Institute, California College of the Arts, Institute for Contemporary Art San Jose, University of California, Los Angeles, Mills College, California State University, Dominquez Hills and University of Missouri, Kansas City.

PNCA’s Low-Residency MFA in Visual Studies summer 2014 session includes a Summer Lecture series featuring talks by visiting artists that are free and open to the public. With the visiting artists & scholars Low-Res MFA students will participate in a site-specific project retreat at Leland Iron Works, workshops through the Fashioning Cascadia exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Craft, studio visits, critiques, and demonstrations each week throughout the summer session.
